Breast augmentation may interfere with breastfeeding. However, there is no significant scientific evidence that suggests breast implants and breast feeding are mutually exclusive. Quite the contrary, there are decades of observational evidence suggesting they are not. During your initial consultation with one of our Phoenix breast surgeons, potential breastfeeding complications will be discussed in full. Your surgeon will also discuss the breast implant options that may reduce complications and help ensure a healthy milk supply.
Reducing Risks
Some evidence suggests that breast augmentation incision options can play a role in future breastfeeding complications. Incisions placed around the nipple may decrease nipple sensitivity, reducing milk supply. Although the study suggesting this was not performed on a significant number of women to be considered conclusive, it is still an important consideration if you plan on breastfeeding in the future.
Another factor that may impact breastfeeding is breast implant placement. Implants placed above the muscles in the chest may place undue pressure on your milk ducts, interrupting proper flow. Submuscular placement can help reduce this risk as well as certain other medical risks such as capsular contracture, making it a better placement option for many of our patients.
Every woman is different and there is never any guarantee against complications. If you plan on having children after your breast augmentation procedure, your surgeon will openly and honestly explain what to expect after breast augmentation during your initial consultation.
